By Carma Hassan | CNNResults are out from a two-year experiment testing the effects of guaranteed income on residents of Stockton, California — but the findings were complicated by the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers say.The program, dubbed the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration or SEED, gave monthly payments of $500 to 131 people starting in February 2019. There was also a control group of 200 Stockton residents.A little over a year later, the Covid-19 pandemic began, launching a domino effect of lifestyle changes as more people stayed home under lockdown orders.Researchers Dr. Amy Castro and Dr. Stacia West, from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Tennessee, found that people who received the money were more likely to be able to handle a $400 emergency, according to the analysis, published Monday in the Journal of Urban Health. The extra $500 a month also “permitted judiciousness about COVID and what conditions workers would tolera...Single-family house sells for $4.1 million in Palo Alto

A 25-year-old bank employee in Louisville, Kentucky, knew he was going to be fired and wrote a note to loved ones before heading to his job Monday morning and opening fire — killing five people and injuring eight others, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. The gunman, identified as Connor Sturgeon, started his attack around 8:30 a.m. at Old National Bank in downtown, authorities said. He opened fire as some employees met for a morning meeting before the bank was open to the public. Rebecca Buchheit-Sims, a manager at the bank, told CNN she watched the meeting virtually and witnessed her coworkers being slain.Buchheit-Sims described Sturgeon as “extremely intelligent” and others who knew him told CNN they were shocked to see the violence, which launched a massive police response in the heart of one of America’s most populated cities. But prior writings by the gunman indicate he struggled to fit in before he joined the team at ...‘Straight Pride Parade’ organizer facing felony charge in Jan 6 Capitol riot

Lauren Boebert

In just over seven weeks since Adam Frisch announced his second campaign to unseat far-right incumbent U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, he’s boosted his war chest by well over seven figures, his campaign announced Thursday. To date, the former Aspen City councilman has raised $1.7 million, “shattering expectations,” Frisch said in a statement. That much money shows a clear break from the slow start his 2022 campaign had, largely due to the national attention he earned by almost unseating Boebert. During the first quarter of that campaign, Frisch had raised $232,575, federal data shows. The 2022 race for Boebert’s sprawling 3rd Congressional district seat was the most expensive House race in Colorado. Combined, Boebert and Frisch raised $14.1 million, compared to the $5.1 million raised by the two nominees in the next-closest race for the newly created 8th Congressional district. The level of fundraising for Boebert and Frisch’s first race even put them on a national scale, making it one of th...Word Game: April 11, 2023

ST. LOUIS (AP) — With forward Mallory Swanson sidelined by a serious knee injury for the foreseeable future, the United States is facing some uncertainty as it prepares for the approaching Women’s World Cup. How will the United States replace one of its best players? “I think that in this past year, you’ve seen a lot of players go down with injury and we’ve been able to adapt,” forward Lynn Williams said. “I think that’s what the team’s going to continue to do, is continue to adapt. Mal’s absence is a huge hole to fill, but we have amazing players on this team and we’re going to figure out a way to do it.”Swanson tore the patella tendon in her left knee during an exhibition match against Ireland on Saturday, throwing her availability for soccer’s biggest tournament this summer into doubt since there is no official timeline for her return. She was the team’s leading scorer this year with seven goals and a six-game scoring streak, tied for fourth longest in tea...Las 5 cosas que debes saber este 11 de abril: Otro tiroteo masivo llena de luto a Estados Unidos
